Decisions about palliative vs curative care in elderly

Josefien Stoffels

Quick medical interventions are at the basis of resuscitation medicine. But for older adults with advanced frailty, de-escalation of medical treatments is often better than escalating. Although Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM)-teams and -trainings warrant better recognition of frailty at emergency rooms, still the underlying principles of resuscitation medicine (‘helping patients by doing interventions’) may conflict with the GEM-teams’ approach, with the supposed time a geriatric assessment costs and the resulting advice to de-escalate. What can we learn when we examine these extremes (‘doing’ versus ‘letting be’)? And how do you ‘do’ a de-escalating approach? In this workshop, I will examine this shift from doings towards supporting via several relevant cases.

Scientific basis for improving presentations

Ross Fisher

The purpose of a presentation is the transfer of knowledge and progress towards learning. The vast majority of presentations fail to achieve this, not due to lack of effort or planning on the part of the presenter or the attention and effort of the audience. Presentations fail because of science. This interactive workshop will allow interrogation of the standard approach to constructing and delivering presentations. From this, we will develop scientific explanations for the challenges we all experience as both presenters or audience.

The extremely agitated patient

Marieke Opdam
Extreme agitation can strike without warning – turning an ordinary shift into a critical situation within moments. Are you prepared to respond swiftly, safely, and effectively? In this workshop, you’ll learn structured approaches to manage agitation. It will provide you with confidence and take away tools you can apply immediately in your daily work. Don’t wait untill you’re in the moment – be ready before it happens.

The high, the low and the extremely normal echocardio workshop (90 minutes)

DEUS
During this workshop we will start off with the extremly normal cardio views, followed by extremes depending your expertise and your own objectives for today to improve your cardiac echo-skills.

APEx method: A structured method for the approach of the patient with acutely unexplained or suicidal behaviour (workshop in Dutch)

David Baden & Floor Frenkel

Daar is vrijwel alles voorhanden.

Utilising science for improving presentations

Ross Fisher

The purpose of a presentation is the transfer of knowledge and progress towards learning. The vast majority of presentations fail to achieve this due to a lack of understanding of the scientific basis for constructing and delivering presentations. This interactive workshop will offer scientific insights and an opportunity to discuss and developing components within presentations that will increase knowledge and learning.

Workshop on extrication in motorsports and helmets removal

Björn Vos & Eric Koolen
This training is designed for emergency medical teams and rescue personnel to improve their skills in handling high-risk situations involving race car accidents. During the workshop, we will cover the critical procedures for removing a H.A.N.S device and helmet from an injured driver while ensuring minimal additional injury. Our instructions will include step-by-step techniques, safety protocols, and best practices based on the latest standards in rescue operations. In addition to theoretical instruction, we will provide a hands-on demonstration using a real demonstration Formula 1 car supplied by Holmatro. This demo will give participants an invaluable opportunity to observe how rescue teams work under extreme conditions to extract a driver from a single-seater Formula 1 car. The real car will help illustrate the complexities and challenges faced during actual rescue scenarios in motorsport accidents.
